TORI'S SENIOR SESSION IN DOWNTOWN NASHVILLE

I met Tori when I photographed her mother's wedding — she was a flower girl, and she was precious. Years later, her mom reached out about senior portraits, and I was thrilled to get to work with her again. If you want to see what a Nashville senior session looks like in a rustic outdoor setting, this one is worth a look. Tori's session had a completely different feel — urban and, in places, historic.

WHY DOWNTOWN NASHVILLE WORKS FOR SENIOR PORTRAITS

What downtown Nashville does well is add texture — something different from the open light you get in a field or a park. Both have their place. One practical note if you're considering downtown: avoid weekends. Downtown Nashville is busy every day of the week, but weekends bring a level of foot traffic that makes it hard to work. A weekday gives you at least a fighting chance at a clear frame.

ABOUT THIS SESSION

I direct during every session — seniors included. I pose, I interact, and I work to make sure the person in front of my camera is comfortable. The goal is to freeze this moment in time of their final year in high school while also offering stand alone timeless portraits. I like accomplishing this by working in elements that are genuinely true to the senior — a book, a piece of jewelry, a sport they play — mixed in alongside the cleaner portraits. Tori loves to read, so her family brought a book and we took a series of photos of her in front of the Nashville Symphony fountain. My 90s child heart had a Belle moment. Tori was a lovely person and incredibly easy to work with. She had a beautiful smile. It was a very windy day, which is its own challenge, but wind during a portrait session is something you learn to add in rather than fight. Some of the best frames came from moments where everything was moving and she was laughing through it.
