IN-HOME NEWBORN SESSION — NASHVILLE, TN

Baby E was two weeks old when I came over. My sweet spot for in-home newborn sessions is 10 to 14 days. I like to give families enough time to settle in a little — the first week is survival mode and nobody needs a photographer adding to the chaos. But I don't want to wait too long either. In that window babies are still sleepy, still curled up small, and the newborn skin is clear. It goes fast.

Melissa and James also have a two-year-old son — biggest brown eyes you've ever seen, and wait until you see his corduroy overalls. He adored his little sister and also got his own time in front of the camera. His squishy smile had me. Their aussiedoodle got his moments too — at one point he photobombed, and honestly it's one of my favorite frames. We used two rooms of their house — good light and backgrounds with minimal distractions is all I need. If you want to see what that looks like in a different home, here's another Nashville in-home winter newborn session.

WHY I ALWAYS PHOTOGRAPH MOM WITH HER BABY

Moms take most of the photos in their family and end up in almost none of them. So I make a point to change that. I know you're tired and I know you don't feel like yourself, but I will take the time to showcase how beautiful you are.

I spent time with Melissa and baby E. Then time with James and baby E. Individual shots with a newborn feel different than group shots and I don't skip them.

NEWBORN DETAIL SHOTS — HANDS AND FEET

Tiny hands. Tiny feet. They change so fast that before you know it you're buying shoes they could share with you. Document them while you can. Your teenager probably won't let you photograph their ears. Working with this family was a joy. These early days go so fast, and being trusted to document them is something I don't take lightly.
